The 2nd International Conference on Universal Digital Library 2006 (ICUDL 2006)
International Conference on Universal Digital Library 2006 (ICUDL 2006)
During the period from 17 to 19 November 2006, Bibliotheca Alexandrina will host the 2nd International Conference on Universal Digital Library 2006 (ICUDL 2006). The conference comes as second in a series of conferences on universal digital libraries. The first conference was held in China last year. This year’s conference comes under the theme “Towards building the globally owned Universal Digital Library where human knowledge is equally preserved and accessed”.
The conference will add to the foundation of the Universal Digital Library (UDL) that will be a portal to foster creativity and free access to all human knowledge. The UDL portal is planned to expand to include all types of knowledge and digital resources produced and acquired by the Million Book Project (MBP) partners and other entities. In the near future, this portal is anticipated to be a gateway to the international content of digital libraries initiatives including all available branches of information from the four corners of the globe in all languages.
The annual Million Book Project (MBP) workshop will take place in conjunction with the conference. The Million Book Project is considered the first milestone towards building this digital library with a free-to-read, searchable collection of one million books in various languages belonging to diversified cultures and civilizations available to people worldwide over the Internet. Partners from USA, China, and India will attend to discuss several issues relevant to the Million Book project and digital libraries. Topics such as information storage and management, search engines, image processing, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), copyright laws and digital rights management will be addressed during the workshop.
